Chivas Regal is the second most abundantly sold whiskey in the world. The sales growth of Chivas
Regal from 2002 to 2008 was a remarkable 61%.
Chivas Regal was first produced by Chivas Brothers whose roots trace back to 1801. Chivas Regal's
home is Strathisla distillery at Keith, Moray in Speyside, Scotland, and the oldest operating Highland
distillery, which was founded in 1786. Chivas Regal was purchased by Seagram’s in 1949, which
enabled a much wider distribution and marketing system. Chivas was later acquired by Pernod
Ricard. The first whiskeys to be sold were the Chivas Regal 25 year whiskey in its target audience in
America. The whiskey during its probation period had already gotten the branding and popularity of a
luxury drink. After the Second World War, in 1950 when Chivas Regal 12 years was launched in
America; Chivas Regal had become the most fashionable brand of the era.
The key principle of the Chivas whiskey was a unique blend of the oldest whiskeys from the
Highland regions of Scotland and a characteristic whiskey from the Speyside region of Scotland.
This theory of blend has been practiced till date. The blend takes place at the Strathisla Distillery
which is the oldest functioning distillery in the world and it produces the maximum malt whiskey. The
heart of any Chivas Regal drink is produced in this distillery.
Blended in the Speyside region of Scotland Chivas Regal has a fruity taste like any other whiskey
from this region and also having roots in the Highland region gives it the smoky flavor. It also a hint
of peat from the whiskeys of Isley region all the whiskeys that Chivas chooses to mix can be bran or
malted bran whiskey and is always aged above 12 years. The whiskey is distilled to a large extent to
gather a larger AVV percentage. The distillation helps in reducing the intense flavor of the bran or
malt in the whiskey. The strong bland can make it a harsh drink for you.
Colin Scot is the master blender at Chivas Regal and is whole heartedly responsible for the strong

6. Bottle Packaging
The bottle is a thin neck thick body circular bottle with a regal touch. The label is a gold and red one
with ‘Chivas Regal’ written in a bold prominent font. It was a ‘12’ mark in a large bold font signifying
the years it has been aged. And it contains the type of drink- ‘Blended Scotch Whiskey.’ It has silver
detailing on the gold bits. It contains an indication that the blend contains 40% alcohol. And I also
hold the content volume of the bottle in the silver details on the gold label. In India, the Chivas Regal
available has 43% alcohol. The beautiful bell shaped bottle with the golden hue of the whiskey is a
delight on its own and it has become an iconic branding disposition. With Chivas Regal being
available in more than 150 countries the bell shaped bottled as a very popular drink. The back of the
bottle has a red label with a gold border containing information about the drink and the company.
The back of the bottle contains a label having the price. The price varies according to the volume
content of the bottle. The average price for a 750ml volume bottle is 5400 Rupees according to the
location. It seems like an apt price for a 12 year old whiskey.
The color of the whiskey is a brilliant amber color which is an artificial color. The coloring is due to a
color E150a also known as ‘spirit caramel.’
It does not have an overpowering smell but a smooth one. The hint of a citrus smell gives a good
feel. It has a strong green apple smell with a little bit of honey. Also the smell of some wild herbs and
spices give it a delinquent smell. And there’s a note of oak in the drink.
It gives a very rich and efferent feel in the mouth. It also gives a citrus touch and the hint of peat is
an absolute delight. The hazelnut and butterscotch flavor enhances the drink to another level. The
finish is an amalgam of many flavors and leaves a fruitful mouth feel. The finish and wearing off of
the drink leaves sweet notes on the tongue.
Overall the price justifies the goodness of the alcohol. Chivas is a sophisticated drink and the best
one at that. Have a good drink and drink responsibly.
